The American Legion Auxiliary initiated the Youth Hero Award in 2003 as a way to recognize young people under the age of 18 years of age who have shown exemplary wisdom and courage by performing a heroic deed.  By recognizing these examples of heroism the Auxiliary is given a unique opportunity to publicize the good deeds of young people.

Carlene Ashworth is the National Children and Youth Chairman and traveled to Lufkin on Friday, October 26, 2007 to represent the national organization on behalf of the National President. A past state President of Texas, Ms. Ashworth is a 42 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

On Saturday, August 25, 2007 the Rainbow Room of Lufkin held it's first Fund Raiser Festival.  Linda Chudej (Unit #113 Chaplain) President of Lufkin Community Partners  is responsible for stocking the room with supplies.  This room is available to CPS officers, 24/7, who have to pick up children from abusive homes.  Many times they are taken with nothing but the clothes on their back.  Unit #113  donated the pillows (shown in the photo) as well as money for head lice kits, which they say is a major problem in school age children. The Rainbow Room is a project that Unit #113 is planning on continuing to support.
